Stegosaurus. Coloured engraving from 1881 of a man viewing a fossil Stegosaurus dinosaur skeleton. Stegosaurus ("roofed reptile") was a herbivore that lived about 150 million years ago during the Jurassic period. It was about 6 metres (m) long and 2.5m high at the hips; it weighed about 1.5 tonnes. The distinctive broad spines running in two rows along its back are thought to have helped control body temperature by radiating or absorbing heat. Stegosaurus defended itself with the long spikes on its tail. Stegosaurus had a tiny brain in relation to its size. The first Stegosaurus skeleton was described in 1875 | |
