Argentinosaurus dinosaur site. Palaeontologists dig for bones of Argentinosaurus huinculensis, the biggest dinosaur discovered to date,at an excava- tion site at Plaza Huincul,Argentina. Argentino- saurus has been excavated here since the late 1980s by Rodolfo Coria (in the middle) and Jose Bonaparte. Although only fragments of the 100- million-year-old skeleton have been found,compar- isons with similar fossils suggest the animal may have weighed 80-100 tonnes. At only 30 metres from head to tail, however,it was not the longest dinosaur. Argentinosaurus was a sauropod,a long-necked vegetarian that lived half under water to support its colossal weight | |
