Reconstruction of a flying dinosaur,Pteranodon. This genus dates from the upper cretaceous period (about 80 million years before present). With a wing-span of up to 9 metres,it is thought that Pteranodon was a superb flyer, although likely to glide most of the time, with an essentially coastal existence. The bony process at the back of the skull is thought to have been an aid to steering. Their main diet was probably large flying insects caught on the wing, and small fish and cephalopods caught whilst swimming on the surface of the sea. This reconstruction, based on fossil remains,is at the Palais de la Decouverte,Paris | |
