High resolution X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanner. Palaeontologist Tim Rowe preparing a fossil egg from an elephant bird (Aepyornis sp. ) for X-ray scanning at the University of Texas,Austin,USA. Unlike medical X-rays,this scanner is used by scientists to study the fine structure of rocks, fossils and biological specimens. It is capable of scanning samples that range in size from only a few millimetres in diameter up to 50 centimetres. The scanner fires hundreds of beams of X-rays at the sample at all angles to create virtual slices. These slices are then rendered into a 3-D model.Photographed in 2007 | |
