Cretaceous bird. Artwork of an Eoenantiornis buhleri bird in a tropical forest. This bird, now extinct, lived during the Early Cretaceous Period (146 to 100 million years ago),in what would later be Asia. It had a toothed beak and claws on its wings. It fed on insects (a beetle is at lower left) and seeds. These and many other animals were fossilised by ash during volcanic eruptions, allowing details of feathers to be preserved. This bird is about to be engulfed by a pyroclastic flow (grey clouds in lower frame) approaching from the erupting volcano (upper frame) | |
