Trilobite fossil. Fossilised Asaphus kowalewskii trilobite. The Asaphus group lived throughout the Lower and Middle Ordovician periods (around 505- 458 million years ago). The trilobites are an extinct group of marine arthropods with a hard, segmented shell that is divided into 3 sections. Most, like A. kowaleskii, were bottom dwellers, feeding on and living in organic sediment on the ocean floor. This animal had well-developed eyes which protruded out of the sediment on long stalks.
