Fossil gnat in amber. A dark-winged fungus gnat (family Sciaridae) embedded in Baltic amber. This insect is 27-38 million years old and belongs to the order Diptera (flies and mosquitoes). Its closest living relative is the dark-winged fungus gnat. Amber is a sticky resin produced by wounded pine trees. It traps small insects as it solidifies and hardens. This is one of the few processes by which fossils are preserved complete with all of their soft tissues | |
