Fossilised fern. Rock containing fossilised fronds of a fern dating from the Carboniferous Period of 354-290 million years ago. This was a time when ferns dominated the land and, when they died, they formed large beds of coal (a form of carbon). This led to the name of this geological period: the Carboniferous. Fossils form by a more delicate process than coal formation. Ferns are flowerless plants that reproduce using spores. This fossil is from the Netherlands | |
