Fossil wood. Macro view of a sample of fossilised wood. This wood, from a fast-growing,tropical,flowering shrub, has turned into a type of rock called jasper. Fossilisation is caused by gradual deposition of minerals by water flowing through dead organic remains. Jasper is formed from extremely fine-grained crystals of quartz (silica,SiO2),and is sometimes polished into gemstones. Sample from the West Indies. Magnification x3 at 35mm size | |
