Stone age burial remains. Fossilised hand from a stone age (palaeolithic) burial site, showing evidence of a ceremonial burial. The hand is gripping a tool, and the area has been coloured with red ochre. This fossil was found in the Arene Candide cave in Liguria,Italy. It is thought to be around 18,500 years old. At this time, the inhabitants of the region were anatomically-modern Cro-Magnon humans (Homo sapiens sapiens). The Cro-Magnons lived in parts of Europe from around 50,000 years ago,and are famed for their cave painting and their creation and use of tools. They are considered to be the direct ancestors of modern humans | |
