Neu Versen Man. Mummified head and torso of Neu Versen Man,a "bog body" dated 220-430 AD in the Roman Iron Age. He is also known as Roter Franz ("Red Franz") because of his red locks of hair and beard. This naked body of an adult man was discovered in 1900 in a large raised bog at the Bourtangermoor, border of Holland and Germany. It is not known how Neu Versen Man met his death. Many ancient bodies have been found in the bogs of northwest Europe. Many met violent deaths by murder or religious sacrifice. Low temperature and oxygen, and high tannins in bog waters led to the mummification | |
