Weerdinge Couple. Mummified body skins of the Weerdinge Couple,"bog bodies" dated 160 BC to 220 AD. These flattened bodies of two adult men were discovered in 1904 in a bog at Bourtanger Moor,Netherlands. Bones of the naked bodies have almost completely dissolved. The body at left (death un- known) lay on the outstretched arm of the other who was fatally stabbed in the chest so that his intestines protruded. Many ancient bog bodies of northwest Europe met violent deaths by murder or religious sacrifice, and homosexuals were also drowned in bogs. Low temperature and oxygen, and high tannins in bogs led to the mummification | |
