Homo erectus footprint. Fossilized footprint in solidified lava of the Roccamonfina volcano in the Campania region of southern Italy. Known locally as "devil's tracks",this footprint along with some handprints have been dated to between 385,000- 325,000 years old. The size of the tracks indicate that they were made by a hominid 1.5 metres tall, that stood fully upright (erect). The dates of the tracks place them in the middle Pleistocene period, which indicates that they were made by Homo heidelbergensis (a European Homo erectus) an ancestor of modern man (Homo sapiens) | |
