MODEL RELEASED. Homo erectus tracks. The palaeont- ologist Dr. Marco Avanzini measuring fossilized footprints in the Campania region of southern Italy. Known locally as "devil's tracks",these prints along with some handprints have been dated to between 385,000-325,000 years old. The size of the tracks indicate that they were made by a hominid 1.5 metres tall, that stood fully upright (erect). The dates of the tracks place them in the middle Pleistocene period, which indicates that they were made by Homo heidelbergensis (a European Homo erectus) an ancestor of modern man (Homo sapiens) | |
