Comparison of bone disease in fossil man and contemporary man. The femur of Java man,Pithecanthropius erectus, later renamed Homo erectus (dark brown bone) was found by Dubois in Java in August 1892. Java man is dated at between half and one million years old. The fossil bone shows a similar pathological condition as the bone of a contemporary person (light bone). The disease is unidentified but has the same ragged, degenerative effect at the knee socket and along the shaft of the bone and may be a form of osteoarthritis | |
