Hominid fossil skull called Arago man, also known as Tautavel man, excavated in 1964 by H. de Lumley in limestone caves in the Verdouble valley near Tautavel,France. The specimen was found on the main living floor in association with a collection of other mammalian fossil bones. The dating of the finds is uncertain although two periods have been suggested: the Third and earlier Second Glaciation periods. Initially Arago man was regarded as an intermediate stage between Homo erectus and Neanderthal man,but more recently it has come to be considered as an European example of a Homo erectus/Homo sapiens transitional form | |
