Neanderthal fossil skulls,Homo neanderthalensis, showing one specimen (top) found in caves at La Chapelle-aux-Saints in France during 1908 and a second (bottom) from the caves of La Ferrassie found in 1909. These skulls were almost complete & quite closely resembled the original Neanderthal find from the Neander valley, near Dusseldorf,Germany in 1857. Originally seen as a degenerate species,Neaderthal is now regarded as a sturdy & successful race. They were short & thick-set with a body resembling modern cold-adapted people. Average brain size was over 1400cc. They lived as hunter gathers, ranging across Europe from about 130,000-35,000 years ago | |
