Tangshan cave near Shanghai in China, where the Nanjing Man (Homo erectus) was discovered in 1993. This discovery cast doubt on the theory that modern Asian populations evolved from the Homo sapiens arriving from Africa about 100,000 to 200,000 years ago. The Nanjing man was dated at between approximately 580,000 and 620,000 years old, which suggests there was a human population in Asia long before it was suggested Homo sapiens arrived from Africa. This would have given the Asian population enough time to evolve in its own right. Photographed in 1999 | |
