As well as a rich collection of mammal fossils dating back to between 1.25 and 1.5 million years, stone tools have also been found at this site and these provide yet more evidence of an early human presence in Europe. Sima del Elefante is one of several sites in Sierra de Atapuerca,Spain, that have been studied on and off over the past century, leading to a massive advancement in the understanding of human evolution. In 2000,Sierra de Atapuerca was made a world heritage site by UNESCO | |
