Migmatite outcrop. Migmatite is formed from the intermingling of Malmesbury rock (dark grey) and intrusive granite (light grey). Malmesbury rock is formed from granite that melted then cooled. Granite is an intrusive igneous rock, formed when volcanic magma solidifies under pressure deep in the Earth's crust. It consists of medium to large sized mineral crystals. Here, unusually, the two rocks are extensively mixed rather than being sharply defined. This phenomenon is known as Sea Point contact. Photographed at Sea Point,Cape Town,South Africa | |
