Jasper bedrock with assorted pebbles of other types of rock. Jasper is a type of silica rock that is rich in iron, giving it a characteristic deep red colour. Jasper is formed in association with hydrothermal activity, whereby heated or superheated water causes changes to rocks. Alternatively,it can be made in a gas-formed lava cavity. At greater than 3 billion years old, these rocks are among the oldest datable rock formations on Earth. Photographed along the coast of Point Samson in Western Australia | |
