Basalt columns. Columns of the volcanic rock basalt. Basalt is formed from solidified volcanic lava. As the molten lava cools it contracts, causing tensional forces that pull open a series of vertical fractures around roughly hexagonal columns of solid rock. The columns become visible when the rock is exposed to weathering,as has happened here. Photographed in the Cascade Mountains, southwest British Columbia,Canada | |
