Cross polarised light micrograph of a thin section of Cornish granite,an igneous rock with a complicated mineral assemblage. Quartz, orthoclase & plagioclase feldspars, biotite & chlorite are all present. The variously shaded grey crystals are quartz, the most common mineral found on earth. The mid-grey crystals intruded with veins of a white mineral are orthoclase hosts with albite intrusions. The mineral biotite shows as a variety of bright interference colours (green, blue, yellow). The twinned crystals (bottom right) are plagioclase feldspar. Magnification x2.5 at 35mm size. Microcosmos P.139 fig.7.21 Technical info: cross polarised light | |
