| Polarised light micrograph of a thin section of gabbro,an igneous rock. Gabbro contains the minerals olivine & plagioclase feldspar. Olivine is recognised in the microscope by its numerous,randomly oriented fractures. Plagioclase feldspar forms lath-shaped crystals consisting of multiple twins. In this micrograph,these twins are seen in a variety of colours because a first-order red compensator plate,or "tint plate",has been placed in the microscope. Magnification: x6 at 35mm size.
