Limestone cliff. Limestone cliff overlooking a path used by leisure walkers (at lower left). Limestone is a sedimentary rock made up of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). The calcium carbonate was dep- osited either by hot springs or as the shells of dead marine organisms. Limestone is a soft rock which is chemically attacked by the carbonic acid formed when atmospheric carbon dioxide dissolves in rainwater. Photograph taken at Malham Cove in North Yorkshire,Great Britain. This 91 metre- high cliff of carboniferous rock (340-285 million years old) was created by vertical displacement in a seismic fault before being eroded by water to form the cove | |
