Fossilized shell gravel. Cut surface of fossilized shell gravel,a type of rock derived from the remains of prehistoric organisms. The light bands are where fossilized shells have been cut. The black material consists of finer particles that have filled gaps between the shells. These shells are from non-marine lamelli branchs from the Carboniferous era (360-286 million years ago). Rock formed from the calcium-rich shells of dead organisms is also called limestone. Sample from Scotland. Magnification x0.25 at 35mm size | |
