Strata in a limestone rock face,a sedimentary rock of calcium carbonate. Most of the strata seen here are pale brown due to small amounts of added minerals. Part of the face is hidden by fallen rock, its colour darkened by minerals washed out by rainwater. Toward bottom right there are two strata of very compact,grey- coloured limestone. The limestone was deposited during the Jurassic period (190-136 million years ago),and was formed by the agglomeration of calcareous shells of various organisms. Such limestones may be used for building materials or as a gravel aggregate. Photographed in a quarry near Genkingen,Germany | |
