Polarised light micrograph of a thin section of a sedimentary limestone. The rock consists primarily of sea-shell fragments compacted together & then cemented with calcite. The wheel-shaped sediment at upper centre right is the spine of an Echinoid,a type of marine creature that lived in the Mesozoic & Cenozoic eras. This makes the rock up to 200 million years old, which is very young in geological terms. This micrograph is the first of a pair (with E415/072) demonstrating how the technique of cathodoluminescence can reveal fine details of rock structure.
