Mass extinction. Artwork of the mass extinction of life that occurred towards the end of the Permian period (280-225 million years ago). As animals & plants die in the sea & on the land, the volcanic eruptions which may have been a cause of the ext- inction can be seen in the background. The erupt- ions may have warmed the ocean or thrown massive amounts of ash into the air. This may have lead to catastrophic changes in the world's climate, such as massive storms & changes in sea levels. The volcanoes may have released toxic gases too. About 90% of species were wiped out at this time, making it the most severe of the four or five mass ex- tinctions which have occurred in Earth's history | |
