Volcanic rock,Iceland. Aerial photograph of volcanic rock in southern Iceland. The land is composed entirely of solidified volcanic lava originating from the eruption of Laki Fissure in 1783. Covering the rock is a blanket of moss and at lower left is a volcanic crater containing a lake. Although the eruption was not explosive, the continuous flow of lava and ash from over 300 craters caused widespread devastation. The lava covered 50 square kilometres of land and poisonous gas killed livestock, resulting in famine and large numbers of deaths within the human population | |
