Volcanic destruction. Aerial photograph of houses and buildings in Plymouth, the former capital city of Montserrat Island in the Caribbean Sea. The city was destroyed by pyroclastic flows from the Soufriere Hills volcano in August 1997,and then partially buried under ash and mud. The city, with an estimated population of 3500,had already been evacuated. In 1998,the British government moved the capital of Montserrat to the northern part of the island. Soufriere Hills began erupting in July 1995,its first recorded eruption in historical times. Since then it has been nearly continually active, ejecting material and causing earthquakes | |
