Volcanic lava delta. Aerial photograph of a delta formed by pyroclastic flows on a coastline next to Soufriere Hills volcano,Montserrat Island,in the Caribbean Sea. Such a delta may be eroded by wave action,or it may form the basis for new land. Soufriere Hills began erupting in July 1995,its first recorded eruption. Since that time it has been nearly continually active,ejecting material and causing earthquakes.
