Thurston lava tube. View of the interior of the Thurston lava tube on Big Island,Hawaii,USA. This feature, also known by its Hawaiian name Nahuku, was formed when a large volume of lava was ejected from a crater on the Kilauea volcano. The outer parts of the flow solidified in the cooler air, while the innermost lava remained liquid, and flowed until the tube was drained. This left just the solidified lava shell. It is thought that this lava tube is between 350 and 500 years old. It is lit and open to the public for around 120 metres of its length, but much more of the tube is inaccessible | |
