Botos volcano crater lake. Aerial view of a crater lake in the dormant Botos volcano. Only the summit of the volcano is visible above the cloud bank. Another summit is seen at upper right. Both summits are heavily forested due to their mineral- rich soils. Crater lakes form when a volcano forms a large crater in an eruption, which then becomes filled with water. Such lakes are often hot and acidic. Volcanic soil is very fertile, and any volcano which has been dormant for some time is readily colonised by plants, and subsequently animals.
