1906 San Francisco earthquake. Ruins of Stanford University's library, destroyed in the large earthquake that occurred on the San Andreas fault on 18 April 1906. The epicentre was several kilometres from Stanford University, just off the coast of the city of San Francisco,California,USA. The earthquake was one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the USA. Most of the damage and deaths were in San Francisco, but other areas also received severe damage in around a minute of violent shaking. The library's outer walls were a veneer of cut stone backed with brick, while the interior walls were made of brick and the central dome was supported on a steel frame. This photograph,by Walter L. Huber,is now part of the Karl V. Steinbrugge Collection | |
