Earthquake damage. Coloured photograph of the damage caused to San Francisco in California,USA,after the earthquake of 18 April 1906. The image shows a line of fires burning out of control. The city lies on the San Andreas fault, one of the world's greatest seismic fault lines. The large earthquake of 1906 caused structural damage and caused a series of fires which burnt for three days, destroying the city centre and much of the surrounding residential areas. San Francisco was quickly rebuilt and is one of the USA's major cities, despite the continuing threat from the San Andreas fault. Image of the Mission area of San Francisco on 19 April | |
