Volcanoes on the ocean floor. Image of the floor of the Pacific Ocean showing the Rano Rahi volcano field. The image was made from sonar and echo- sounding data. The colours show the depth of the ocean floor, from dark blue (deepest) through light blue, green, yellow and red to white (shallowest). The black areas are regions where no data were gathered. The linear arrangement of the seamounts is due to seafloor spreading from the nearby East Pacific Rise,a constructive tectonic plate margin. This view shows the western part of the field,in which some volcanoes are up to 2000 metres high. Rano Rahi, one of the largest volcano fields in the world, was discovered in 1992 | |
