Rock fall at Hengistbury Head in Dorset,UK. The headland is composed of alternating layers of sedimentary rock. One of the layers, the Upper Hengistbury Beds (upper middle section of cliff) is composed of sandy clays interspersed with nodules of ironstone. These frequently fall to the base of the cliff as it weathers. Prior to the 1850s,the fallen 'doggers' of ironstone formed a defence that protected the cliffs from erosion. The removal of the doggers by a mining company has resulted in an increase in the rate of cliff retreat | |
