Examples of some of the more spectacular features of coastal erosion. The constituent rock types of coastal cliffs have different permeabilities and consequently some stratum are more susceptible to erosion by wave action than others. The arch (centre) results from erosion of a region of porous rock. The sea stack (far right) is a later stage of the same process; eventually the crown of an arch collapses under it's own weight, leaving a pillar of rock. Photograph taken at Pembroke in Wales | |
