Omaha Beach and the US military memorial,QuickBird satellite image. This was the site of one of the landings on D-Day,on 6th June 1944. These landings marked the beginning of the liberation of Europe from Nazi occupation. Four other beaches in Normandy,northern France,were also invaded: Sword,Juno,Gold and Utah. Omaha Beach was the most heavily defended of the five beaches,and was the scene of the fiercest fighting. The Allied forces,comprising soldiers from the UK,USA and Canada,took almost 10,000 casualties and suffered more than 4000 dead. The invasion was successful despite these losses |
