Chesil Beach,a coastal shingle bank with a covering of sand. Chesil Beach is about 25 kilometres (km) long and for 13 km of this has a brackish lagoon called the Fleet behind it. The pebbles in the beach are piled up to 12 metres high and 180 metres across. The action of wind and currents sorts the pebbles in the beach so that those at the eastern end are larger than those in the west; this process is known as longshore drift. Photographed at the eastern end of the beach at the Isle of Portland in Dorset,Great Britain. Chesil Beach links the island to the mainland, and so is known as a tombolo | |
