False colour NOAA satellite image showing the 1984 Atlantic "El Nino" event. Atlantic El Nino events occur when the cold equatorial current fails to reach as far north as the equator on the Atlantic coast of Africa,& they are associated with severe climatic changes. The image shows sea surface temperature in the Atlantic & eastern Pacific in July 1984,colour coded according to the scale beneath the image. A "tongue" of cold water reaches the equator on the Pacific coast of South America, but there is no equivalent tongue of cold water on the Atlantic coast of Africa. Compare with E265/002,which clearly shows such a tongue in the normal year of 1982 | |
