Pacific Ocean, seen from the International Space Station (ISS). North is at bottom. There are two coral atolls (bottom centre): Onotoa (left) and Tabiteuea (right, only partially seen). These are found just south of the equator. The southern part of the Pacific Ocean, partially covered by clouds, stretches away to the curved limb of the Earth. The curve is more pronounced than is normally seen from the ISS. This is because a wide-angle lens was used to photograph this view. Onotoa,in the foreground,is 20 kilometres long. The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of around 380 kilometres. Photographed on 13 June 2003 | |
