Glacier. View of a large glacier as it enters the sea. The left hand side of this glacier is very dark as it is full of accumulated material which it has picked up on its way to the sea. On land, such material is deposited when the glacier melts to form moraines. When glaciers reach the sea, however, the leading ice starts to float, and they are known as tidal glaciers. Due to the unstable nature of the water, great strain is placed on the terminal wall of a tidal glacier, and large chunks of ice often break off, floating away from the glacier as icebergs. Several small icebergs can be seen in front of the glacier. This is the Turner glacier in Alaska,USA | |
