The terminal part of a glacier in the Langtang national park region,Nepal. The glacier is situated on the Langtang Lirung mountain (7246m) close to the border with the Chinese region of Tibet. Glaciers form on mountains where the annual snowfall rate exceeds the annual melting and drainage. As the snow accumulates the ice becomes more compact and its pressure causes a downwards displacement of the glacier. With its movement it erodes rocks, changing the topography of the valley. If it moves on an uneven surface crevasses form, visible here as horizontal fractures on the glacier's surface | |
