Inside a crevasse. A researcher is dwarfed by the walls of a giant crevasse. A crevasse is a large split or fault in a sheet of ice, such as a glacier. This crevasse is about 5 metres across and 20 metres deep. In the lower half of the image it may be seen that falling and drifting snow has bridged part of the crevasse. From the surface,it would be impossible to detect and presents a major hazard to those travelling over the ice. Photographed in Antarctica | |
