Tornado research. Two doppler radar trucks studying a thunderstorm for tornado activity. Tornados are small, violent vortices of air that form in powerful thunderstorms. Radar studies of the storms can show where a tornado is likely to develop, which allows warnings to be sent out to residents. Thunderstorms and tornados form in cumulonimbus clouds, such as the one at upper right. Tornados have the strongest winds on Earth, with some reaching over 500 kilometres per hour. They can devastate affected areas, but do not last long. Photographed in Kansas,USA,in 1997 | |
