Ocean meteorology. A prototype of the Sonic Buoy,an automated device for making meteorological measurements at sea. The 2 metre tall buoy is capable of being left to drift for weeks,taking measurements of wind velocity,temperatures and humidity. The buoy keeps track of its position using a satellite navigation receiver,and transmits its data to a base ship. By deploying many of these buoys at once,data may be gathered from a very wide area simultaneously. An understanding of the weather at the air-sea interface is vital to the study of climates
