Forest fire. A forest fire burns in an area consisting mainly of dead conifer tree trunks. The trees were damaged in a previous severe storm, known as a blowdown, and have been deliberately set alight by firefighters. The high moisture content of the live trees nearby ensured the controlled fire would not spread. Firefighters use local knowledge of terrain and vegetation to combat forest fires. In this case, controlled fires were used to halt the progress of the main forest fire. Photographed in 2001 at Mount Zirkel Wilderness,Colorado,USA | |
