Flood defences,Venice. Barrier erected to hide construction work from the view of tourists in the Piazza San Marco,Venice,Italy. The construction work will carefully raise the level of this part of the historic city. This will protect against extreme floods, due to winds and tides, that are predicted to worsen because of global warming. This view looks from the water's edge to the Bell Tower (Campanile). This is 99 metres tall and dates from the ninth century. It was rebuilt in 1912. The piazza regularly floods. This work is part of the MOSE flood defence project, which will also use moveable barriers across the sea inlets to Venice's lagoon. Photographed in 2003 | |
